Natural Tinnitus Relief

Tinnitus can be a major burden and is effectively incurable. Treatments like counselling and sound therapy don’t work for everyone. Many people try home remedies and therapies to try to combat the annoying ringing and give them relief.

Tinnitus is difficult to treat because we still don’t really know what causes it. Underlying causes such as Meniere’s disease or a middle ear infection make treatment easier. However, for many people, their tinnitus has no clear cause which makes treatment challenging.

Anyone can be affected – male, female, old or young. In many cases, the symptoms of tinnitus just come and go as the brain and ears adjust to the noise. Yet, for those who have a longer lasting ringing, the consequences can be devastating. Tinnitus can affect your wellbeing and mental health. The use of sound therapy, cognitive behavioural therapy and tinnitus retraining therapy are types of psychological help available.

However, these methods don’t work for everyone. So, what alternative home remedies and therapies are available?

Relaxation and music

Relaxation can make you think of candles, perfume oils and soft music in the background, right? This is true, but relaxation can be anything that makes you feel comfortable and calm. Some forms of relaxation can include yoga, colouring, meditation and listening to soothing sounds of the sea and waves before going to sleep.

The benefits of relaxation for tinnitus sufferers can be huge. Particularly if the activities help to divert your attention away from the irritating sound in your ears. Simple techniques like meditation and listening to soothing music can make a real difference to your quality of life.

Exercise and hobbies

Taking part in regular exercise, hobbies or social activities can have a positive impact on the symptoms of tinnitus.

Relief from symptoms can be achieved through simple tasks such as walking.

Exercise can help you to achieve greater levels of well-being, self-esteem and confidence. If you have tinnitus, taking part in regular exercise can help you to cope with the noise tinnitus causes. It can help you to get a better nights sleep, too. Exercise doesn’t have to mean joining the gym or training for the marathon either, it can simply mean taking the dog for a long walk or going for a swim.

Ginkgo Biloba

Ginkgo Biloba is part of the Ginkgoaceae family.. The leaves are full of biologically active compounds (phytochemicals). These help us to carry out our normal functions and so we must eat them in our diet. Diets high in fruits, vegetables, grains and plant-based beverages are well-supported. Ginkgo Biloba helps to improve blood flow and maintain good vascular tone. These are important aspects when considering treatment for tinnitus.A potential cause could be vascular problems around the cochlear nerve cortex. Issues with the flow of blood and the heart can mean that oxygen is not delivered adequately to the outer hair cells of the cochlea, leading to the onset of subjective tinnitus.

Ginkgo Biloba preparations have been shown to be effective in the treatment and management of tinnitus. A review carried out in 2011, found the standardised extract EGb 761® was found to be a good natural remedy for the treatment of tinnitus compared to placebo. Ginkgo Biloba can ensure a good supply of blood and oxygen to the cochlea and outer hairs.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar is known for its antibacterial and antifungal properties. It can help to fight underlying infections which may be causing tinnitus. A recipe used by tinnitus sufferers is to mix 2 teaspoons of apple cider vinegar and a small amount of honey in a glass of water.

The basic principles of natural and self-help practices for the treatment of tinnitus are to distract attention away from the irritating sounds in the ears and onto something else.
